Cortland County, NY is seeking an experienced public-sector professional to serve as Deputy County Administrator. This position will work in close partnership with the County Administrator to strengthen internal operations, coordination, and organizational performance across the County’s 28 departments.
The Deputy County Administrator operates at the intersection of strategy and execution—helping translate priorities into action, improve internal systems and processes, support department leadership, and ensure important initiatives move forward with consistency and accountability. The role also provides significant support for operating and capital budget development, long-term financial and capital planning, and ongoing financial and administrative modernization.
Key priorities include strengthening internal operations and cross-departmental coordination; supporting budget development and navigating fiscal pressures; advancing long-term financial strategy and capital planning; modernizing financial and administrative systems; and helping lead strategic, economic development, and other high-priority initiatives.
Cortland County is looking for a highly organized, analytical, and proactive government professional who can manage multiple priorities while maintaining strong follow-through. The successful candidate will bring sound financial and administrative capability, strong communication skills, political awareness, good judgment, and the ability to work effectively with elected officials, department heads, staff, and the public.
The position offers a salary of $93,916–$125,001 and a comprehensive benefits package. The Deputy County Administrator reports to the County Administrator and must reside in Cortland County or a contiguous county. This is an exempt class civil service position serving at the will of the County Administrator.
